Detectives Recover large Weapons Catch from Somis Resident

We still live in a country where you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but apparently no proof, jury, or trial is required to take away your property and ability to defend yourself.

Sheriff’s detectives seized a large cache of guns and ammunition from a Somis man’s home after he allegedly fired shots toward a neighboring residence this week.

Deputies responded to a call Tuesday evening about shots fired in the 500 block of rural East La Loma Avenue north of Camarillo, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office reported. Deputies tried to talk with a resident, 60, but he was uncooperative and said they were not welcome on his property, according to the sheriff’s account.

Deputies found no immediate evidence of a crime but later that evening heard a barrage of gunfire they believed came from a large-caliber firearm in the same area.

Detectives returned Wednesday and found fresh bullet strikes in eucalyptus trees south of the man’s residence. The trajectory was in the direct line of a neighboring home, authorities said, and likely would have struck the occupied residence if trees hadn’t been in the way.

The detectives returned Friday morning with a search warrant and arrested the man on suspicion of discharging a firearm with gross negligence and shooting at an inhabited dwelling, both felonies. They seized from his home a large cache of firearms, ammunition and equipment used to make ammunition, sheriff’s officials said. The man remained in Ventura County jail Saturday evening in lieu of $60,000 bail. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Ventura County Superior Court.
